Backpacks and supplies contributed by Kalfus & Nachman, PC
Adopt-A-Student is different from other school supply programs in that we help individual children not just add to the general supply.
We work with homeless shelters, housing programs and schools in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton and Newport News. They provide us with a list of their children including an ID number, age, gender, grade level and school information. Sometimes we even get the children's favorite color or character – these are exciting for the kids and heartwarming for the adults!
When you "adopt" a child (or children!) you are provided with all of the above information as well as that child's specific supply list. Next comes the fun part - you get to go shopping! We ask that you purchase all of the required supplies as well as a new backpack, pack all of the items together in the backpack, clearly mark an attached tag with the ID number and deliver to the designated shelter or school office.
Without our help, these children could start the year empty handed. The shelters often fall through the cracks. You can make a difference.
While Adopt-A-Student's main focus is on the individual children, there is still a great need for bulk supplies at the school level. Title I schools are located in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods and especially in need of additional supplies. Too often teachers have to reach into their own pockets to provide supplies to children in their classrooms.
While Adopt-A-Student will give the neediest of students the supplies they need to start the school year, paper, notebooks, pencils and pens will run out. Both the schools and shelters need help in replenishing these supplies throughout the year.
Adopt-A-Student is happy to facilitate a bulk supply donation to one of the shelters or schools participating in our program. You can also try reaching out to the guidance counselor at your local school.
